Meningococcal infection is a disease caused by the bacteria Neisseria meningitidis. The early symptoms are not obvious, but the condition deteriorates very quickly. When the bacteria invade the blood (meningococcemia) or the lining that surrounds the brain and spinal cord (meningitis), it can cause serious illness and even death.
Symptoms of meningococcal infection include: high fever, severe headache, stiff neck and drowsiness. There may also be vomiting, photophobia or skin rash. If the situation is serious, it may cause brain damage, which will affect intelligence and intellectual development. Slowness, deafness and electrolyte imbalance or death. Invasive meningococcal infection can lead to arthritis, myocarditis, endophthalmitis or pneumonia. Meningococcal infection is a serious illness and patients should be treated with antibiotics as soon as possible. Those in close contact with the patient are required to undergo medical monitoring to detect early symptoms and take preventive drugs when necessary.
